BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville rowing team battled through rough waters and continued to show remarkable signs of improvement Saturday as the Cardinals were narrowly edged in a pair of races against Indiana on Lake Lemon in Bloomington.
Less than 1.3 seconds was the difference in the Novice 8+ race, but the Cardinals were the ones who came up short. IU won the event in 7:56.30, with U of L right behind in 7:57.57.
In the Varsity 8+ race, the Cards finished second with a time of 7:12.19, just six seconds behind IU. Last fall, the Cardinals were defeated by the Hoosiers by 57 seconds in a Varsity 8+ race that was twice the distance, so the improvements were highly visible in the eyes of head coach Richard Ruggieri.
"This race demonstrated to our rowers that commitment to getting better each day is very rewarding," said Ruggieri.
The Varsity 4+ race was cancelled due to white caps on the water.
The Cardinals hope to carry their momentum into Sunday's race at Dayton. The event will begin around 9 a.m.
