Women's Tennis Falls to Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Louisville women's tennis team lost to Long Beach State 6-1 at the 49er Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
Long Beach State's Anastasia Dvonikova prevailed at the top seed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Katie McLaughlin. Senior Mandy Carvalho won at No. 2 singles, defeating the Cardinal's Julie Penn, 6-0, 6-1. Louisville's Kelly Whitler fell in three sets to Sophie Han 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 3. Long Beach's Alena Dvornikova defeated Paige Eber 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. U of L's Melissa San Martin, coming off of a wrist injury and playing her first singles match of the spring, lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. The Cards' only singles point was posted by Mariana Torres with her 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.
The Beach swept the doubles as Carvalho and Han defeated McLaughlin and Whitler, 8-4 at No. 1, while Alena and Anastasia Dvornikova won 8-1 over Penn and Melisa San Martin at No. 2 doubles. Cheryl Kindred and Vicki Stone defeated Paige Eber and Kelly Kiehna 8-2 at No. 3.
Louisville drops to 4-14 on the season. The Cards will travel to Madison to face Wisconsin on March 24.
