
Women's Tennis Wins Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The U of L women's tennis team snapped a ten-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Evansville and then posted a 7-0 win against Belmont Wednesday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
In the Evansville match, the Cards began by winning the doubles point as the team of Melisa San Martin and Julie Penn defeated Bambi McCann and Liz Hedde 8-1at the two spot and Kelly Kiehna and Mariana Torres won over Natialie and Jessica Tessier 8-6 at No. 3. Evansville's Brandee Fox and Brooke Hoener combined to beat Katie McLaughlin and Kelly Whitler 8-6 at the top seed.
In singles, McLaughlin clinched the match for Louisville with her 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 1. Penn posted a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over McCann at No. 2. Whitler won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Torres claimed the six-spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Natalie Tessier and Jessica Tessier posted wins for the Purple Aces at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively. Evansville drops to 2-4 on the season.
Against Belmont, Louisville swept the singles as McLaughlin won over Alba Garcia at the top seed 6-0, 6-4. Penn defeated Starr Steffner 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, Whitler won over Lides Valera 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 seed. Freshman Paige Eber recorded her first collegiate dual match win with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Carrie Osborne at No. 4. Kiehna claimed the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Katie Kelsey and Torres completed the sweep with her sixth consecutive victory, a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Kristina Mukhyisan.
The Cards swept the doubles as McLaughlin and Whitler teamed to defeat Steffner and Garcia 8-3 at No. 1, Penn and San Martin combined to defeat Valera and Osborne 8-1 at No. 2 and Eber and Torres posted an 8-2 win over Kelsey and Mukhyisan at No. 3. The Bruins fall to 2-2 on the season.
"The team put in a solid effort," said U of L coach Meg Peavy. "They earned every point they won tonight. We've had a string of tough matches in which we lost by one point, and we were finally able to pull everything together and come out on top. We could very easily be 10-4 right now."
Louisville (4-10) will play host to Middle Tennessee Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
