OXFORD, Ohio - The No. 14 University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University 4-0 Friday at Oxford, Ohio.
Louisville's Kim Hughes gave the Cards a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the first half when she connected on a penalty corner with a feed from Pip Sanders. The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Sanders netted an assist from Olivia Netzler two minutes into the second half to make the score 2-0. Elisa Eshelman scored off of another Netzler dish to give Louisville a 3-0 advantage at the 16:37 mark. Susan Sattazahn capped off the scoring for the Cardinals when she connected on another Sanders assist with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
Sanders finished the game with a goal and two assists.
The Cardinals outshot Miami 15=3 and held a 15-3 penalty corner advantage.
U of L goalkeepers Christy Hershey and Janina Perna notched the Cards' seventh shutout of the season. Miami goalkeepers Marie Vaughn and Kerri Orr collected five saves. The RedHawks fall to 2-17 (0-10).
Louisville (14-4, 7-3) will play host to Appalachian State (6-10, 3-3 NorPac) Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
NOTES: - The U of L field hockey team dropped from No. 6 to No. 14 in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey rankings and from No. 9 to No. 14 in the STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll after losing to (then) No. 12 Kent State 2-0 and No. 13 Ohio 3-2 in overtime. The next NCAA ranking is released on Tuesday, Nov. 6, the STX/NFCHA poll will come out on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
- Louisville will host the 2001 MAC Field Hockey Championship Nov. 2-4 at Trager Stadium. Pairings for the tournament will be available Sunday, Oct. 28.
