CINCINNATI - Senior Madinah Slaise scored a career-high 36 points to lead the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team to an 84-65 victory over Louisville in the regular season finale for both teams.
After trailing 9-6 early, UC went on an 11-0 run to take a 17-9 lead and never trailed thereafter. Slaise scored 13 of UC's first 19 points. The Bearcats extended their lead to 24 points in the first 40 seconds of the second half as Slaise hit a three and senior guard Candice Roberson converted a fast-break layup to make it 48-24. Louisville came back with a quick 11-0 run over the next 3:13, but Slaise hit a jumper to stop the run and the Cardinals came no closer.
Senior guard Jill Morton matched her career high with 26 points for Louisville on 10-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Morton scored Louisville's first nine points of the game, but was then shut out until the final minute of the half as UC built a 43-24 halftime advantage.
Slaise shot 12-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. The five treys are a season high. She was also 7-of-10 from the free-throw line and added four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward Portia Flournoy posted her second career double-double, recording 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Louisville (16-12, 9-7 in C-USA) plays UNC Charlotte at 6 p.m. Friday in the first round of the 2000 Jewish Hospital Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament.
