BOSTON - University of Louisville freshman rower Laura Scherberger placed 19th in the 2000m Women's Lightweight Division last weekend at the C.R.A.S.H-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships, which was held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston, Mass.
Scherberger ranked 19th overall out of 93 competitors from around the world, ninth out of 70 collegians and second among freshmen.
In the morning heat, Scherberger finished with a time of 7:30.30 to place eighth among collegians, which automatically qualified her for the afternoon's finals. During the preliminaries, Scherberger rowed next to U.S. National Team member and world record-holder Lisa Schlenker, who went on to place first overall in the event.
"She (Schlenker) is truly an amazing athlete," said Scherberger. "I have a lot of respect for her, and erging next to her was thrilling."
The Roswell, Ga., native recorded the ninth fastest time among collegians in the finals with a time of 7:31.30.
"Overall, it was an exciting challenge for me," said Scherberger, who also had the opportunity to visit with some of her former teammates from the Junior National Team. "It's still very early in the season, so I am hoping to drop a lot of time over the next couple months. I think that going to this event has only helped set myself and the team up for greater success in the racing season."
The U of L rowing team will begin its spring season with a week of training in Winter Park, Fla., in mid-March, culminating with the Rollins Spring Training Regatta on the 18th.
