LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Gary Williams' follow-up with two seconds remaining in the second overtime gave Global Sports an 87-86 victory over the Louisville Cardinals in Freedom Hall. His layup completed a 34-point effort by the former Southern Cal standout as U of L dropped its second and final exhibition contest of the 2000-2001 season.
Williams' 22-footer with 19 seconds remaining in regulation forced the first overtime and erased a late three-point Cardinal lead. U of L had a chance to win the game with 10 seconds left but sophomore guard Reece Gaines missed the front end of a one-and-one situation and send the game into an extra session.
Gaines topped U of L with 27 points on 10 of 19 shooting. The Madison, Wisc. native scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime periods.
U of L won the battle of the boards getting 57 caroms led by freshman Luke Whitehead's 17 including five off the offensive glass. Whitehead and fellow rookie Ellis Myles combined to grab 33 rebounds as the Cardinals posted a 10-rebound advantage over Global Sports.
The Cardinals will return to action Tuesday night with Georgetown visiting Freedom Hall for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The game will be televised live nationally by ESPN.
