
Field Hockey Wins First Round of MAC Tournament

ATHENS, Ohio - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Ball State 4-0 in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. This is the first time U of L has advanced to the second round of the tournament since joining the MAC in 1994.
Louisville senior Lainey Habeeb broke a scoreless tie with 7:23 remaining in the first half when shescored an unassisted goal to give U of L a 1-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore Danielle Barr added an insurance goal just three minutes into the second half when she scored on a penalty corner with assists from sophomores Keri Beckhorn and Pip Sanders. Sophomore Jen Welgosh connected on a cross from Beckhorn wth 11:53 remaining in the game to give Louisville a 3-0 lead. Habeeb capped off the scoring less than two minutes later on another Louisville penalty corner. Sanders and Beckhorn assisted on the final goal to give U of L the 4-0 win.
Habeeb scored two goals and Beckhorn had three assists to spur U of L to a school record 14th win. Freshman goalkeeper Christy Hershey recorded five saves for the Cards' seventh shutout of the season.
Ball State goalie Susan McDowell collected ten saves as Louisville outshot Ball State 17-9.
Louisville (14-7) will play tournament host Ohio University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
