Louisville, Ky. - Sixteen games against teams that participated in postseason play last year, including NCAA Tournament participants UC-Santa Barbara, Nebraska, Texas, Western Kentucky, Arizona, UAB, Marquette and Tulane, highlight the 2000-01 University of Louisville women's basketball schedule.
"We have compiled a very tough nonconference schedule this season to prepare our young squad," said head coach Martin Clapp. "Our nonconference schedule combined with our conference schedule should put our strength of schedule in the top 30."
Louisville will begin play with two exhibition games. On Nov. 1 the Cardinals will host the Reebok Lady Stars in Freedom Hall at 5:00 p.m., as part of a double-header with the men. They will have one more chance to fine tune before the season begins against Finland, which will be played in Cardinal Arena at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 8.
The Cardinals will then begin a tough road stretch that will last until the first of December. They will begin play against preseason Top 20 team UC-Santa Barbara in the Nebraska Time Warner Cable Classic. And if the Cardinals get past them, a tough Nebraska team could be waiting for them.
Louisville then travels to Cancun for the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol. In the first round Louisville will square up with the Texas Longhorns. Louisville could face either Denver or Minnesota in the next game. Last season Denver saw postseason action in the WNIT.
Finishing out the month of November will be a renewed series with Western Kentucky in Bowling Green on Nov. 30. The Hilltoppers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and feature All-American candidate ShaeRae Mansfield.
Returning to the friendly confines of Freedom Hall, the Cardinals will play Illinois State on Dec. 2 at 4:30 p.m. Louisville will then play intrastate rival Kentucky on Dec. 9 in Freedom Hall.
And if that wasn't tough enough, Louisville will travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on the Arizona Wildcats.
Louisville will then finish out their nonconference schedule at home, featuring Canisius on Dec. 20 and the Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29.
The Cardinals will kick off Conference USA play on Jan. 1 against Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m. In the last four years, Louisville has opened up conference play with a win.
Louisville will continue its home-and-away series with American Division opponents Cincinnati (Jan. 1, Feb. 24), DePaul (Jan. 12, Feb. 11), Marquette (Jan. 14, Feb. 8), Charlotte (Jan. 19, Feb. 18), and Saint Louis (Jan. 21, Feb. 16). The Cardinals will travel to Houston (Jan. 7), Tulane (Jan. 26), and Southern Miss (Jan. 28).
Louisville will feature home games against National Division opponents South Florida (Jan. 5), Memphis (Feb. 2) and UAB (Feb. 4). Conference USA home games against Charlotte and UAB will be played in the Convention Center instead of Freedom Hall this season.
Conference USA play will finish up in Milwaukee, Wis. at the Conference USA Tournament March 2-5.
