In their highest scoring game of the season, the University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent Central Michigan 6-1 on Friday at Trager Stadium. The win sets a school record for most wins (12) in a regular season.
Louisville sophomore Susan Sattazahn put the Cards on the board ten minutes into the game when she scored on a Pip Sanders assist on a penalty corner. The Chippewas' Brianne Talligner tied the game at one when she connected on an assist from Melissa Lazerevski. Louisville senior Lainey Habeeb put the Cardinals ahead for good when she nailed a penalty stroke with 33 seconds remaining in the half to give her team a 2-1 halftime lead.
Sophomore Jen Welgosh scored on a Sanders assist just one minute into the second half to give U of L some insurance and then added another goal just two minutes later. Sophomore Keri Beckhorn improved her team-leading goal total to 11 by scoring with 27:51 remaining in the game and again with 19:04 left in the game to give the Cards the 6-1 win.
"After two weeks of working hard, the team finally came together today and the hard work has paid off," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I'm very proud of this team for everything that they have accomplished."
This marks U of L's first win over Central Michigan since joining the MAC in 1994.
The Chippewas (8-9, 4-5 MAC) will travel to Miami to take on the RedHawks on Saturday.
U of L (12-7, 4-5) will close out the regular season on Saturday when they play host to Ball State (4-14, 1-8) at Cardinal Stadium at noon.
