Laura Ziegler eclipsed 1,500 career points in the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 23/22 Louisville women's basketball team (6-2, 1-0 ACC) continued its winning ways this weekend with an 88-50 win over East Tennessee State (2-6) Saturday afternoon at Knights Hall. After a close first quarter, the Cards outscored the Buccaneers 66-32 over the final three quarters.
Imari Berry led all scorers with 17 points and was extremely efficient on the night with 4-for-6 shooting, 3-for-4 from behind the arc and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. She tied for the team lead with a season-high six rebounds and had two steals, an assist and a block. Laura Ziegler scored 16 points to go with six rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Ziegler eclipsed the 1,500-point mark for her career with her first three of the game. Elif Istanbulluoglu joined the duo in double figures with a career-best 15 points.
The Cardinals had another strong first quarter as they eclipsed 20 points in the opening frame for the second-straight game this weekend. Louisville shot 9-for-18 from the floor and was 2-for-5 from three as they took a 22-18 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Coming off her career high 12 points on Friday night, Istanbulluoglu had eight points in the first quarter.
The defense dug in during the second quarter as the Cards held the Bucs scoreless for over seven minutes. During that time, the Cards ripped off a 21-0 run in large part to Ziegler. She hit her third and fourth three-pointers of the afternoon as the Cards lead reached double figures. The Cardinals were red hot from three in the second as they hit five of the seven shots from behind the arc and took a 45-29 lead into the break.
Istanbulluoglu set a career high in back-to-back days as she tallied 13 points in the first half on 6-for-11 shooting. Ziegler led all scorers with 16 points and was 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Ziegler also had a season-high six assists over the first 20 minutes of play.
The Cards shot well from the floor and the free throw line in the third quarter. The Cards were 7-for-10 from the field and 10-for-11 from the line as they outscored the Buccaneers 25-11 in the quarter. They held ETSU to just 4-for-18 from the field in the third.
Another big run brought the game home for the Cards in the fourth quarter. Louisville ripped off a 21-3 run in the final frame as the Cards closed out their sixth win of the season and second in as many days.
The final day of the multi-team event is set to close out the weekend on Sunday. The teams return to the KFC Yum! Center as EIU vs. ETSU begins the day at 11:30am and Louisville will face Bellarmine in the second game. The Cards and Knights are set to square off at 2 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
