Anaya Hardy recorded her second double-double of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 23/22 Louisville women's basketball team (5-2, 1-0 ACC) left no doubt in its 91-38 win over Eastern Illinois (0-6) Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center. This was the first day of a three-day multi-team event that the Cardinals and Bellarmine are hosting this weekend. ETSU won the first game 55-49 over Bellarmine before the Cardinals victory over the Panthers.
Louisville had four players in double figures, led by Tajianna Roberts with a game-high 13 points. Roberts was 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-5 from behind the arc to go with five rebounds and two assists. Anaya Hardy had a game-high 12 rebounds and scored 11 points for her second career double-double. Elif Istanbulluoglu set a career high with 12 points and Mackenly Randolph had a season-best 12 points in the win. Reagan Bender had a game high and career best five steals in the win.
Louisville's defense had its best performance of the season, allowing a season-low 38 points. It was the fewest points allowed in a game since November 16, 2023, when they allowed 33 points against Bellarmine. The Cardinals forced a season-high 31 turnovers against the Panthers, the most since December 3, 2023, when they forced 31 against NC A&T.
Louisville had the scoring going early as they got over the 20-point mark in the opening quarter. The Cardinals ended the quarter on an 8-0 run and had a 21-12 lead after the first 10 minutes. Istanbulluoglu was already in double figures after the first quarter, as she scored 10 points in the opening frame.
Louisville continued the run into the second quarter, as they scored the first six points of the frame and EIU was forced to use another timeout. Bender was active in the passing lanes with three steals in just five minutes of action early in the first half. The Cardinals were on point from the floor in the second quarter, as they hit 10-for-15 (66.7%) and hit their final three shots heading into halftime. Louisville took a 47-23 lead into the break.
Istanbulluoglu surpassed her career high with 12 points in the first half to lead all scorers. Randolph scored seven of her nine points in the second quarter and was 4-for-4 from the floor in the first half.
The Cards had another strong spurt to begin the third quarter. They went on a 13-4 run over the first half of the third and held EIU scoreless for over three minutes. Roberts had seven points and was 3-for-3 from the floor over the first five-plus minutes of the third. The scoring drought extended to a 4:42 before EIU scored again in the third as Louisville went on a 15-0 run. The Cardinals held the Panthers to just nine points in the third and went into the fourth with a 69-32 lead.
Louisville allowed a game-low six points in the final quarter as it eclipsed 90 points for the second time this season.
The Cards will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of the multi-team event. The Cards will be across town at Knights Hall on Bellarmine's campus to take on ETSU Saturday afternoon. The Cards and Buccaneers will play the second game of the day at 3:30 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on ESPN+.
