Cards take the field for a productive fall season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  As the end of the fall semester nears, the University of Louisville softball team is concluding a productive offseason that focused on team cohesion both on and off the field.
Â
"We had a very productive fall, learning and growing together as a team," said head coach Holly Aprile. "Our roster will have significant changes from a year ago and the fall provides us a great opportunity to see where we stand in terms of replacing that production."
Â
Following an injury-riddled 2024 campaign in which they produced a 27-25 overall record, the Cardinals return eight field players and five pitchers including 2023 All-ACC selections Easton Lotus and Alyssa Zabala. Louisville also welcomes eight newcomers to the 2025 roster after the graduation of seven starters including National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Southeast Region honoree Riley Frizell as well as two-time All-ACC selection Daisy Hess.
Â
The current squad took the field in August and went on to post a 6-2 record with wins against Bellarmine, Eastern Kentucky, Indiana and Middle Tennessee and losses to Indiana and Kentucky. Overall, the Cards turned in solid offensive numbers, boasting a .331 team batting average with nine doubles, three triples and three homers. Eight players batted above .300 with senior Maddi Grant leading the way at a.526 clip in the offseason.
Â
"After suffering several very difficult injuries last season, it was great to have Char Lorenz, Easton Lotus, and Ally Alexander back on the field," said Aprile. "Maddi Grant had a terrific fall leading us in most offensive categories and we will look to rely on her experience and leadership in the spring. We welcomed two transfers, Bri Despines and Camryn Lookadoo as well as six freshman, Madison Pickens, Taylor Monroe, Riley Janda, Jordan Williams, Ryann Sanders, and Mikayla Milby all of whom made a positive impact this fall."
Â
Six different pitchers took the circle in the fall season as senior Sam Booe dealt a team-best 15 strikeouts in 16.0 innings and junior Alyssa Zabala held opponents to a .195 batting average. Â
Â
"Our depth and versatility are much improved from a year ago and our newcomers will be a vital part of our lineup flexibility," said Aprile. "Our pitching staff complemented one another nicely throughout the fall, and we will look for some of that same vibe and energy this spring."
Â
The 2025 schedule will be released in the upcoming weeks.
