The Cardinal jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after an early turnover by the UofL offense. The Cardinals responded with an interception of their own, leading to a one-yard score by Donald Chaney Jr., cutting the lead to 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The ground game continued to be the point of emphasis for the Cards in the second quarter, as Watson rushed for a five-yard touchdown to give Louisville a 14-13 advantage. UofL extended its lead as Tyler Shough found Bell in the endzone for a 10-yard score to bring the advantage to eight going into the half.
Coming out of halftime, Watson found the endzone for his second score of the game, breaking open a 68-yard run to extend the Louisville lead 28-13. Stanford responded to close out the third quarter with a 13-yard score to cut the lead to a one score game.
The two teams continued to go back and forth in the fourth quarter as Watson rushed for his third score of the game to bring the score to 35-21. Watson is the first true freshman in school history with over 100 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
The Cardinal answered quickly however, as Ashton Daniels found Emmett Mosley in the back of the endzone for a four-yard score, bring the score to 35-28 midway through the fourth quarter. Stanford tied the game with 45 seconds left as Mosley caught his third touchdown pass of the game to tie the game at 35 apiece. The Cardinal iced the game after a 52-yard field goal split the upright as time expired.
Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm said:
"Very disappointing loss. It falls on me. A lot of silly things happened throughout the game that cost us. It really happened the entire game, not just at the end. Of course, the two penalties at the end were devastating so that's on me. We got to be more discipline and make sure those things never happen again. We got to be focused and locked in the entire game and play football and compete, whether the game is going good or not and we gave in at the end and did some dumb things. We didn't deserve to win and it was a bad day for us."
