
Merissah Russell Named to Team Canada for 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup

She is one of 12 athletes named to the Senior National Team
TORONTO — The University of Louisville women's basketball team is just weeks away from competing in the 2023 GLOBL JAM but one of their members will be getting a tune up prior to the tournament. Senior guard Merrisah Russell has been named to the Canadian Senior National Team for the upcoming 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup. She is not the only Louisville representative that will be at the event as LaMont Russell will be working as the video coordinator with Team USA during the tournament.
The 2023 AmeriCup is being held in Leon, Mexico and will run from July 1 until July 9. Russell was one of 12 athletes named to the Canadian National Team as she has been in training camps with them since the end of May.
Canada is one of five teams in Group B with Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Colombia. Group A is represented by the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba.
Canada will open the Group Stage with a matchup against Mexico on Sunday, July 2. They will face Puerto Rico on July 3, Colombia on July 4 and close the group stage against the Dominican Republic on July 5.
The top four teams from each Group will advance to the quarterfinals on July 7. The winners of the quarterfinals will face off in the semifinals on July 8. The finals and third-place game will close the tournament out on Sunday, July 9.
Team Canada is coming off a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022, Canada's best finish at the World Cup since a third-place finish in 1986.
Canada's Senior Women's National Team is ranked fifth in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike after the rankings were updated following the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.
