TORONTO — University of Louisville women's basketball guard Merissah Russell has been invited to Canada's Senior Women's National Team Training Camp, Canada Basketball announced this week.
The training camp will be from May 22-29 and held up in Edmonton as the first phase of preparation as the team sets their sights on the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023. Following the training camp segment, Canada will have an exhibition game against Japan on June 2 in Victoria, B.C.
Russell has had many appearances with the national team on various levels in her career. Last summer, she played for the U-23 team as they competed in the GLOBL JAM tournament that the Cardinals will take part in this summer. She also competed with the national team during the 2022 World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Osaka, Japan. During the summer of 2021, she played in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Russell was also an alternate for Canada's women's basketball team that competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games but did not travel.
The FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 will feature the top ten teams in the zone competing in the most prestigious senior women's basketball tournament in the Americas. Canada was drawn into Group B for the competition and will face the host nation Mexico (July 2) Puerto Rico (July 3), Colombia (July 4), and Dominican Republic (July 5) in the Group Phase.
The Canadian national team is coming off a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022, the team's best finish at the World Cup since a third-place finish in 1986.
