Cards Row in Finals of the Sunshine State Invitational
April 01, 2023 | Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. -- The University of Louisville moved into the finals on the second day of racing Saturday afternoon at the Sunshine State Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.
"One thing is certain about this regatta is we always find ourselves in multiple bow ball to bow ball races with multiple boats for the entire 2000 meters," said head coach Derek Copeland. "This is invaluable and exactly what we are looking for right now. We want to be in these tight races so that we can continue to let go of our perceived limits as we search for a new level."
Â
The Varsity eight finished fourth with a time of 6:35.53. The Second Varsity Eight was seventh in their grand final with a time of 6:44.80. The Cardinals' Varsity Four was third in the petit final with a time of 7:52.25. The Second Varsity Four was second in their petit final with a time of 7:51.89.
The V8 has a lot of seniors and fifth years in it and that is starting to hit home for all of us," said Copeland. "We are hitting the home stretch and they are all rowing like they realize how special this experience is for them and their team. The 2V8 has come a long way over the last six weeks. We know they have worked hard for every incremental gain. We continue to try different options in the fours but we've yet to land on a combo that clicks. This is a tough situation because not rowing in the water this time of year is particularly challenging for them."
Â
The Cards were joined by Central Florida, Miami (RV), Stetson, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Kansas State, Drexel, Louisville (RV), Michigan State, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kansas, Wisconsin (RV) and Old Dominion also lined up on the water in Sarasota.
The Cards are back in action on April 21-22 at the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, N.C.
"We have three weeks with just two weekends home and I am certain we will be getting on our river more. We know where we are and are hungry for more," said Copeland.Â
