October 13, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Damien Barker John’s first half goal lifted the Cardinals to a win on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 1-0 victory over Boston College on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (8-3-2, 2-3-1 ACC) got a first-half goal from Damien Barker John and made it stand up the rest of the way to improve to 6-1-1 on its home pitch.
Alex Svetanoff turned in a clean sheet, his fifth of the season, notching three saves on 12 total Boston College shots.
The first six shots of the night belonged to the Cardinals, including a pair from Konstantinos Georgallides in the opening minutes.
Boston College (3-6-4, 0-4-2) took four of the next five shots, including one from inside the box that connected with the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
Louisville then broke through in the 29th minute. The BC goalkeeper punched away an in-swinging corner kick that was corralled by David Boccuzzo. The sophomore swung a cross into box that deflected off Josh Jones to Barker John on the left side of goal, and Barker John blasted a right-footed shot into the top of the net for the opening goal.
The goal was the sixth of the season for the sophomore, all of which have come in the last seven matches.
The Eagles had two looks at net over the final 16 minutes, but one was off target and Svetanoff saved the other.
Shots came quickly in the early stages of the second half, with eight of the half's 12 shots being taken in the first 11 minutes out of the break.
However, neither side was able to put a chance home during the final 45 minutes, securing the victory for the Cards.
Louisville held a 14-12 advantage in shots on the night, while BC had a 4-3 edge in corners.
The Cardinals will play their next two matches on the road, beginning Tuesday with a road date at Oakland. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Rochester, Mich.
