Cardinals and Buckeyes Finish in 2-2 Draw
October 10, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Cards got goals from Brandon McManus and Konstantinos Georgallides
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men's soccer team (7-3-2, 1-3-1) scored a goal in the first half and the second half but ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw with Ohio State Tuesday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals had a 2-0 lead after Konstantinos Georgallides' penalty kick goal but the Buckeyes scored twice in the final eight minutes and the match ended in a draw.
Brandon McManus scored the first goal for the Cardinals in the first half, his first goal of the season and sixth of his career. Georgallides scored his third goal of the season and seventh of his career in the second half. Alex Svetanoff tallied his first career assist on McManus' opening goal and had four saves on the night.
The Cardinals opened the match on the front foot and nearly got the opening goal in the 10th minute. Sander Road collected a ball just inside the attacking third and sent a low, driven ball into the box. David Boccuzzo received the ball and volley it over to Damien Barker John who got in behind the Buckeyes defense. Barker John quickly got a shot off but it went wide of the far post.
The Cardinals continued to push forward and got the opening goal in the 18th minute. The play started from keeper Svetanoff who sent a kick just past midfield. Georgallides was first to the ball in the air and headed it forward to McManus. McManus was behind the defense and ended up 1-v-1 with the Buckeye keeper. McManus' low shot got a piece of the keeper but found the back of the net for the first goal of the match. It was McManus' first goal of the season and gave the Cards a 1-0 lead.
The Cards took the 1-0 lead into the half and they held a 5-4 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. Louisville allowed just one of Ohio State's shots to reach goal.
In the second half, the Cardinals looked to double their lead in the 55th minute. Barker John took a shot from distance that was blocked by a Buckeye defender but fell to Axel Alejandre. Alejandre wasted not time and fired a shot of his own that was also blocked by a defender. Barker John was first to that rebound and his follow up shot was deflected away by the Buckeyes keeper.
The Cardinals would get their second goal of the match in the 70th minute. Georgallides drew a foul inside the box that led to a penalty kick opportunity for the Cards. Georgallides stepped to the spot and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to put the Cards up 2-0.
The scored stayed that way until the 83rd minute when Ohio State broke through with its first goal of the match from Andre Roberts. The Buckeyes continued to push forward and found the equalizer in the 86th minute from Laurence Wootton.
The Cardinals will remain at home to close out the two-game homestand later this week with a conference opponent on deck. The Cardinals will welcome Boston College to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Friday, October 13. The Cardinals and Eagles will square off at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
