Cardinals Open Homestand Against Georgia Tech
January 04, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Louisville has two nationally televised games at home this week against Georgia Tech and Pitt
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The NR/RV Louisville women's basketball team starts off a quick, two-game homestand on Thursday when they welcome Georgia Tech to the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals (11-5, 2-1) and Yellow Jackets (9-5, 0-3) are going to square off at 8 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast nationally on the ACC Network.
The Cardinals have been the best team in the ACC since they joined the league in the 2014-15 season and have been extremely successful against conference teams at home during that time. Over the nine seasons in the ACC, Louisville is 116-19 (.859) in conference games. They have the most conference wins during that span and they are the only team with a winning percentage over .800 over the past nine seasons. Louisville has won its last 12 ACC games at home, dating back to the 2020-21 season.
Hailey Van Lith continues her great play this season after scoring 23 points on 11-of-21 shooting against Duke last Sunday. It was her second-straight 20-point game and the ninth time she has scored 20 or more this season. She has scored 20 or more points in each of the Cardinals three ACC games this season and is averaging 22.3 points in those games. She is the first Louisville player to score 20 or more points in each of the first three ACC games of the season since the Cards joined the league. She is the first player to score 20 or more points in each of the first three conference games in a season since Angel McCoughtry during the 2008-09 season.
The Cardinals are coming off a loss and have been very successful in bouncing back in Jeff Walz's 16 seasons as head coach. Not counting the final game of each season, Louisville is 79-23 after a loss under Walz. In its last 12 games following a loss, the Cardinals are 11-1 in those games. In ACC play, the Cardinals have lost back-to-back games just twice over the 135 conference games they have played since the start of the 2014-15 season.

ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
Georgia Tech enters Thursday's matchup with a 9-5 record this season and are 0-3 in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets have played two of their three ACC games on the road so far and have fallen to Boston College and Virginia while losing their most recent home matchup to Florida State. Georgia Tech has a common opponent with the Cardinals as they have faced Belmont twice this season, once in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. and the other in Nashville. The Yellow Jackets won both matchups against the Bruins and the Cardinals defeated the Bruins in Nashville in the opening weekend of the season. The Yellow Jackets rank fifth in the ACC in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 35.4 shooting from the floor. On offense, the Yellow Jackets are 15th in the league in field goal percentage, as they shoot 36.1 percent from the floor.
Series History - The Cardinals and Yellow Jackets will meet for the 10th time in program history as all the matchups have come as members of the ACC conference. The Cardinals are 9-0 all-time against the Yellow Jackets and Georgia Tech is one of two ACC teams the Cardinals have not lost to in program history (Wake Forest). The Cardinals are 5-0 against the Yellow Jackets in games played in Louisville.
Last Meeting (Jan. 2, 2022) - Emily Engstler scored 14 points and hit a layup with three seconds remaining, lifting No. 2 Louisville to its 12th straight victory, 50-48, over No. 16 Georgia Tech on Sunday. In a matchup of the nation's top scoring defense in Georgia Tech and the nation's third-best in Louisville, the Yellow Jackets (10-3, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) aimed to knock off a top-three team for the second time this season after beating UConn at home on Dec. 9, but Lotta-Maj Lahtinen's heave from half-court fell short at the buzzer. Louisville (12-1, 2-0 ACC) called timeout with 14.6 seconds remaining and the score tied at 48-all. The Cardinals called on Engstler, who caught an entry pass at the high post, faked a look to a teammate and then attacked the basket to give Louisville just their third lead of the game after Georgia Tech led for 33 minutes, 33 seconds.
