Cards suffer first loss of the season at No. 15 Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 15 Georgia on the final day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
The teams played outdoors after a nearly three-hour delay due to rain in the area and the preceding consolation match between Miami and LSU. After losing the doubles point  for the first time this season, the Cardinals picked up a singles win and saw a pair of courts go to third sets, but host, 15th-ranked Georgia prevailed to earn a bid to the ITA Indoor Championship.
"I'm proud of how the guys competed after a slow start," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We found a way to get back into the match and give ourselves an opportunity to win, but we ran out of time against a very good Georgia team." Â
The Cardinals (5-1) played through a highly competitive doubles point that culminated in a pair of 6-4 losses on courts two and three. Matthew Fung and David Mizrahi fell to Teodor Giusca and Phillip Henning at No. 2 while Etienne Donnet and Sergio Hernandez lost to No. 55 Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston at the three- spot.
The Cardinals quickly responded in singles on court three where Donnet took down No. 70 Teodor Giusca 6-1, 6-0 at the three-spot. With the win, the senior moves to 6-0 on the season in dual match play.
Georgia regained the lead at No. 6 when Miguel Perez Pena defeated David Mizrahi 6-3, 6-2.
On court one, Louisville's 25th ranked sophomore Natan Rodrigues battled with the nation's top-ranked player, but fell short in a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Ethan Quinn. Georgia clinched the victory at the No. 2 spot where No. 10 Philip Henning beat No. 36 Fabien Salle 6-2, 7-6(3).
The remaining courts were in third sets when the match was decided. At No. 4, senior Matthew Fung rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set, taking the second 6-3 and was trailing No. 106 Trent Bryde 3-1 when the match ended. Sergio Hernandez rallied from a 6-2 first-set loss to win the second 6-2 and was tied 3-3 with No. 21 Blake Croyder.
The Cardinals return to action on Feb. 10 when they play host to No. 5 Kentucky at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
