Student-Athletes Make Impact in the Community on MLK Day
January 23, 2023 | Beyond the Buzzer
More than 150 student-athletes participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
LOUISVILLE, Ky.– On January 16, more than 150 student-athletes and athletic department staff members served the greater Louisville community by partaking in the University's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The athletic department partnered with the University of Louisville's Student Involvement and Engage Lead Serve Board to help student-athletes get involved with local non-profits and charities.
Â
The Day of Service gave student athletes the opportunity to take what would have been a day off and honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and use their time to help a variety of local organizations. Before embarking on their designated service sites, student-athletes listened to a variety of speakers who expressed the importance of giving back to our communities and the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Â
"Our goal is always to help our student-athletes give back to the community that they serve," said Adora Hicks, PhD., Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development. "This experience gave them a chance to extend themselves and reflect on the impact that MLK had and how they can use their influence to positively impact others."
Â
Student-athletes participate in a variety of service projects throughout the year. However, Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day gave them an introspective experience they are not soon to forget.
