University of Louisville field hockey coach Justine Sowry has announced that Malachi Mahan will join her staff as an assistant coach.
Â
"I am super excited to be joining the University of Louisville Field Hockey staff," said Mahan. "I am looking forward to both learning from Coach Sowry and helping bring my own experiences to the team. The opportunity to coach a top ACC program is a highlight of my career so far."Â
Â
Mahan comes to Louisville after spending eight seasons (2013-20) as an assistant field hockey coach at the University of California.
Â
"I am ecstatic to welcome Malachi to our coaching staff for the fall season and beyond," said Sowry. "We were fortunate to have Mal serving in a temporary role this spring and we gained valuable insight into what he brings to the program. He has a solid coaching background combined with the expertise and the ability to challenge and to offer a different perspective. Mal brings the skills I was looking for in this position and will be a great addition to our staff. I could not be more excited for the new chapter that is about to begin for Louisville Field Hockey."
Â
During his time in Berkeley, Mahan helped the Bears reach several milestones. In his first season, the Bears advanced to the NorPac Tournament semifinals and the team matched a program-record with six All-NorPac selections, including West Offensive Player of the Year Lara Kruggel and West Defensive Player of the Year Courtney Hendrickson. California went on to win the 2017 America East Conference West Division title. In Mahan's final season at Cal, Kiki De Bruijn was named the 2020 America East Rookie of the Year and the Bears advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Â
Â
Mahan also helped coach U.S. Women's National Team member Megan Rodgers and U-21 selections Brynn Zorilla, and Katrina Carter as well as six National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-West Region honorees.
Â
Prior to his stint at California, Mahan was an assistant coach with the U.S. Men's Under-16 team.
Â
Mahan has established an impressive playing resume, with 10 years with the U.S. Men's National Team organization (2001-10). The defender earned his first CAP with the national team at the Mexico Four Nations Tournament in Salamancia, Mexico on August 10, 2002 and earned more than 30 caps in his career. Mahan also served as a captain on the 2005 U.S. Pan American Junior Championship team that finished fourth overall in the tournament in Havana, Cuba.
Â
The Camarillo, Calif., native earned his degree in liberal studies at Arizona State in 2013.Â
