
Cardinals Beat Dayton and Bellarmine to Open the Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2022 season with a doubleheader sweep, defeating Dayton 6-1 and Bellarmine 7-0 Tuesday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cardinals (2-0) will return to action this weekend when they hit the road to face No. 12 Kentucky on Friday followed by a Sunday matchup at Northwestern.

"Obviously, we are excited to be back," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "The guys looked a little shaky the first match, not very sharp, a little nervous, but they fought through it, played well and kept competing and we came up with the win. In the second match, we were a little bit more confident and played better. We were a little bit more aggressive and that's why the second match looked a little bit cleaner. We are excited for the season, we are excited to keep things going."
On the day, Josh Howard-Tripp tallied a pair of wins in both singles and doubles while Etienne Donnet, Sergio Hernandez, and David Mizrahi had added two singles wins and a doubles victory.

Louisville 6 – Dayton 1
The Cardinals and Flyers played a tightly-contested doubles point which saw Louisville win on courts 1 and 3. Alex Wesbrooks and Etienne Donnet gave Louisville an early advantage with a 6-4 win over Connor Bruce and Joe DeMarco at the No. 1 spot. Josh Howard-Tripp and David Mizrahi defeated Georgi Mavrodiev and Ronit Hiryur 6-4 at No. 3 to clinch the first point of the match. On court two Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez were tied at 5-5 when the point was determined.

In singles, David Mizrahi quickly extended the Cards' lead when a 6-2, 6-2 win over Joe DeMarco at No. 5. Donnet followed with a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Bruce at the top seed. Chen secured the win on court three, defeating Matt DeMarco 6-4, 6-3.

Dayton (0-3) got on the scoreboard on court six when Eric Perkowski outlasted Wesbrooks 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7).

Howard-Tripp added another singles point with a 6-2, 6-7 (9-7), 1-0 (10-6) win over Ronit Hiryur at the two-spot. Sergio Hernandez defeated Will Harper 7-5, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (10-4).

For the second time on Friday, the Cardinals took an early 1-0 advantage after winning two of its three doubles matches. Hernandez and Chen defeated Jack Batchelor and Donovan Ecarma 6-1 on court two and Josh Howard-Tripp and Kyle Tang topped Joe Naville and Emil Berglund 6-2 at the three-spot to secure the point.

Tang quickly pushed the Cardinals' lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Naville at No. 6. Hernandez defeated Berglund 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 to extend Louisville's lead to 3-0. David Mizrahi recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ecarma on court five and Donnet defeated Cole Groetsch 6-3, 6-3 at the top seed. Howard-Tripp defeated Batchelor 6-2, 6-1 and Tin Chen recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win over Paul Reynolds to complete the sweep.
