Walz Provides Updates on the Cardinals
May 11, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball head coach Jeff Walz addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon to wrap up 2020-21 and discuss the upcoming season.
He opened by thanking the media for their continued coverage of the team, announced that his entire staff will return next season and provided well wishes to Angel McCoughtry, who suffered a season-ending knee injury over the weekend.
On the addition of Emily Engstler.
"Emily averaged close to a double-double at Syracuse. We had the opportunity to play against her several times, so we are very familiar with her and what she can do. She will be instant help. We needed some help in rebounding, we needed some size. She can shoot the three, her mid-range game is solid. I think she's going to be a huge asset."
On the addition of Chelsie Hall.
"Chelsie gives us some point guard depth. She is a true point guard. She distributes the basketball. She hasn't shot a ton of threes because that's not what she's looking to do, but she can make them. She can really run a team. We're excited to bring someone in that has that type of experience."
On what to expect from Hailey Van Lith in year two.
"I think she will be more assertive. As a freshman, you're trying to get a feel for things and then you have a player with the ability that Dana (Evans) had that is a senior, you kind of let her do what she does. But now, I think Hailey is ready to take that next step and be more aggressive, both scoring the basketball and verbally."
On the improvement of Liz Dixon.
"She's excited because she saw the progress that she had from year one to year two. When you see your hard work starting to pay off, it's a lot easier to get back in that gym and keep working. It's going to be a big year for her and we need her to make that big jump."
On what it will be like to have 100 percent capacity at games next season.
"Our freshmen didn't get to experience what it is usually like here at Louisville. We still had about 3,000 fans per game and were very fortunate to have the fans that we did. But, we're hoping to be able to get back to the 10,000 like we normally do, so our players can experience that home court advantage."
In 2020-21, Louisville went 26-4, won it's fourth straight Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title and advanced to its third straight NCAA Elite Eight.
