Louisville Athletics Participates in Read Across America
March 17, 2021 | Beyond the Buzzer
Louisville student-athletes have spent the past two weeks participating in Read Across America service opportunities. This national initiative kicked off on March 2 and ran through March 12. Read Across America encourages literacy across all ages by creating a fun and exciting experience centered around reading a story.
Â
This year over 70 student-athletes from 15 different teams participated in the national initiative. This year Louisville student-athletes were able to serve 15 different schools, which is the most schools that have been reached through Read Across America by student-athletes.
Â
"This program has allowed us to reach many schools in the Louisville area. Not only that, but we have been able to join classes of kids from kindergarten all the way up to fifth grade and share some of our favorite books and stories from when we were in Elementary school," said sophomore Ladybird MaKenzie Kelley.
Â
Student-athletes were able to join classrooms through videoconferencing software, and share the digital version of the book they were reading by sharing their screens. This allowed for students to follow along, even though most of the student-athletes were participating virtually. Students also had the opportunity to ask the questions, once the reading was complete.
Â
Louisville student-athletes are still currently competing in the 2021 NCAA Team Works Competition through the Helper Helper community service app. There are three weeks left in the competition, and the University of Louisville is currently ranked first among Division I universities.
