Louisville had nine representatives participate in the annual event.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville athletics department had nine individuals represent the university at the annual NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar.
The seminar, held virtually from Feb. 3-5, served as a professional development event designed to provide leadership, educational and transitional programming for current graduate assistants and interns from NCAA member schools, conference offices and affiliate organizations. The three-day virtual program worked to educate, develop and connect selected participants and equip attending young professionals with the skills necessary to accelerate their career progression in college sports.
Chandler Brandes, Quincy Carpenter, Zack Day, Jazzmine Folston, Jessica Jackson, Darius Martin, Caitlyn Shumate, Brianna Smith and Jacob Watson each took part in the seminar from the University of Louisville. All nine individuals serve in the department as interns, graduate assistants, or as members of the Louisville Future Leaders program.
This year's seminar included 319 participants, 65 speakers and administrators, along with 225 unique organizations accounted for.
"The Emerging Leaders Seminar was an incredible opportunity for me to learn more about my values, how to display those values throughout my actions, and the importance of developing authentic connections within a team- especially during the current hybrid of work environment between in-person and virtual settings," Day said. "I'm excited to begin applying what I learned this past week within our team in marketing."
The program featured presentations from prominent industry experts, including NCAA national office executives who informed attendees about the national governing body's role in the college sports landscape.
"It was an amazing experience," Jackson added. "I was able to meet so many leaders and emerging leaders. I feel like the Emerging Leaders Seminar was an amazing opportunity and I am excited to implement what I have learned into my career."
"This year's NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar was a great experience," Martin commented. "Even in a virtual setting, my #ELS21 cohort and I were able to connect and grow with not only industry professionals but with each other as well. There were countless gems that I took away and will be applying on my journey. I am very grateful to be a part of this year's class!"
For those interested in becoming future interns within the Louisville athletics department, the application process is currently open and runs through April 2.
The University of Louisville Athletic Association, Inc. (ULAA), has developed a practical, career-building internship model to prepare the next generation of athletic administrators and sports industry professionals.
