Cardinals Pick Up Eight Wins on Day 1 of the Cardinal Classic

Cards played doubles versus MTSU and Ball State and singles versus DePaul

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team picked up three doubles wins and five singles wins in the first day of competition at the Cardinal Classic held Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Classic is held in a hidden dual match format.

Louisville opened the morning with a doubles win over Middle Tennessee, a team who only had five players available for competition. Cardinals Andrea Di Palma and Chelsea Sawyer beat Noelle Mauro and Lee Barnard 6-2.

In the doubles match against Ball State, Verma, this time paired with Di Palma rolled 6-3 over Emma Peeler and Amy Kaplan. UofL's Dina Chaika and Chelsea Sawyer downed Livia Kukacs 6-4.

In singles, against former conference foe DePaul, the Cardinals won all but one match. Di Palma won 7-5, 6-2 over Yuliya Kizelbasheva. Verma rolled 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 over Eleanor Nobbs. Chelsea Sawyer won her first set in a tiebreaker before winning when her opponent retired with an injury. Cardinal freshman Tyra Richardson beat Valentina Martin 6-3, 6 -1 and Joy Callwood won 6-4, 6-1 over Kaya Rand.
