Cardinals Off to Strong Start at Louisville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2021 Louisville Invitational Tournament with six wins Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With rain in the area throughout the day, all of Friday's matches were played indoors.
"Overall, I thought we had some really good results today," said head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We let a few points get away from us, but the guys have continued to show improvement and I look forward to seeing how we finish the tournament."
The Cardinals opened the day with a pair of doubles wins. In the 'A' draw, Alex Wesbrooks and Josh Howard-Tripp teamed to beat Purdue's Piotr Galus and Michal Wozniak 6-2 in the quarterfinals, but fell 6-3 to Indiana's 6-3 in the semifinals. While playing in the 'B' draw, the duo of Kyle Tang and David Mizrahi lost a tough 7-6(7) decision to Toledo's Wojciech Szczesny and Adam Kovac in the quarterfinals, but rebounded for a 6-1 win against Purdue's Athell Bennett and Rohan Sachdev in the back draw.
In Flight 'A' quarterfinal singles action, Howard-Tripp defeated East Tennessee State's Juan Sebastian Zabala 7-5, 6-1. Matthew Fung split sets with Toledo's Pawit Sornlaksup before falling 10-6 in a third-set tiebreaker. In the 'B' draw, Mizrahi topped Bellarmine's Simeon Kostov 6-2, 7-6(4) and Wesbrooks beat Indiana's Jagger Saylor 6-2, 6-1. Kyle Tang cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Toledo's Vlad Meluta to wrap up the day.
The tournament will continue Saturday with the first of two rounds of singles starting at 10 a.m. followed by one round of doubles.
