Cards Wrap Up Fall Competition
October 14, 2021 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team wrapped up a successful fall campaign with a pair of home contests last weekend at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
"I think we had a really good fall season overall," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "This year, more than any fall I can remember, we really focused on mixing the lineups and utilizing different people in situations. There was a lot of learning and growing throughout out the fall."
Â
The Cardinals hit the road for the bulk of fall competition with seven games over five weekends. Louisville opened play with a doubleheader sweep at Eastern Kentucky and followed with 10-inning games at Kentucky, Tennessee and a twin bill at Indiana.
Â
In the final weekend of fall competition, Louisville returned to the friendly confines of Ulmer Stadium to face cross-town rival Bellarmine. The Cardinals defeated the Knights 13-4 on Friday before capping the fall season with the Red & Black intrasquad scrimmage which saw the Black Squad prevail 11-4 on Sunday.
Â
"It was great to be able to watch how the team would respond to in-game situations, especially since we didn't get to do that last fall," said Aprile. "We had the opportunity to travel as a team and experience playing several games on the road with a tough schedule that brought a lot of challenges with it and I really think that was beneficial."
Â
With the fall season providing ample opportunity for playing time and trying different lineups – with all five freshmen in the lineup at times - Aprile was pleased with how the team progressed.
Â
"We were working through a few injuries, but I think they adapted pretty quickly," said Aprile when asked about how the freshmen have acclimated to the college game. "They hit the ground running and were very responsive to coaching and learning new things. We made a ton of progress in a short amount of time and even from our first games of the fall to where we are now."
Â
Louisville returns 17 players from last year's team including National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Southeast Region and All-ACC selections Carmyn Greenwood and Taylor Roby. Among the returners are 12 upperclassmen including seven seniors and five juniors, as well as senior transfer Hannah File (James Madison) and graduate transfer Kendall Smith (Western Kentucky) - all of whom bring valuable experience to share and leadership that they provide both on and off the field.
Â
"We definitely saw a lot of positives in all aspects of the game and, at the same time, we identified some of things that we need to continue to improve, but the growth was evident," said Aprile.
Â
The Cardinals will open the 2022 season in February. The complete spring schedule will be released in November.
