Student-Athletes Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Student-athletes write handmade cards and letters to be sent to senior citizens in Louisville
On Monday, January 18, University of Louisville student-athletes spent the day engaging in acts of service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Although this annual day of service looked different than in years past, it did not stop the student-athletes from making a difference in the community. Student-athletes took time to write handmade cards and letters that were distributed to senior citizens around Louisville.
"For MLK Day, my team wrote letters of encouragement to senior citizens in our area to bring them some comfort and support in these difficult and lonely days," said women's swimming and diving team member, Abby Hay. "We hope to bring light into these dark times just like MLK did for the world."
Over 265 student-athletes from 11 different teams participated in this service project. The goal was to collect 500-600 handmade cards and letters from student-athletes to send to Elderserve, a non-profit that serves senior citizens around Louisville.
"We are so grateful for our partnership with UofL and the student-athletes for thinking about older adults in our city. These have been extraordinarily isolating times for them, and simple messages of hope and kindness go a very long way," said Drew Hight, Director of Development and Marketing for Elderserve.
UofL student-athletes are proud to give back to their community by bringing joy and connection to senior citizens who are currently in isolation.
Megan Mangines, sophomore lacrosse student-athlete, reflected on this experience and how it embodied the unselfish spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "I think it is important to go out of our way and help others as much as possible. Especially on days like MLK Day which serve as a reminder of the selfless service and sacrifice that Martin Luther King Jr. made a part of his daily life. We should use this as an example for our own lives and try our best to help others not only today but every day."
