Louisville, Ky. – The University of Louisville placed two teams in the top 40 of 2020 Spring Helper Helper Team Challenge. Women's soccer is ranked No. 26 and field hockey appears at No. 37 for their community outreach efforts from January 1 through March 16.
Women's soccer had 90 percent volunteer participation at the team's 22 community service opportunities. They accumulated 288 service hours with 15 different organizations.
"I am very proud of our team for finishing in the top 100 of Helper Helper!" said UofL women's soccer coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Our student-athletes are prideful in their affiliation with the local community and are committed to giving back."
Field hockey had 100 percent volunteer participation at the team's 12 community service opportunities. They accumulated 233 service hours with 14 different organizations.
"Our program prides itself on being the best it can be in all aspects, on the field, in the classroom, as strong confident women and out in the community," said UofL field hockey coach Justine Sowry. "Our commitment to community service continues to be a priority for our team and they always have such satisfaction in the activities and events that they engage in. The best thing about it, is that they lead it themselves."
Louisville was named the winner of the NCAA Team Works Award Competition for outstanding community service from September 1 through December 6, 2019. With 6,827 service hours by 718 student-athletes, the department as a whole averaged 9.5 service hours per student-athlete. UofL teams partnered with 98 nonprofit organizations. The top four partners included Jefferson County Public Schools, Score International, Norton Children's Hospital and Louisville Ironman.
