UofL student-athletes read to elementary schools across Louisville as part of literacy initiative
Read Across America week is a national initiative to promote literacy across all ages of children and reminds kids the joy that comes from reading. It kicked off last week on March 2nd which also falls on the birthday of one of the most popular children's authors, Dr. Seuss and continued to March 6th. Â
Â
Eighty UofL student-athletes and staff from 17 different teams went across Louisville to read books to 13 different elementary schools and non-profits.
Â
"I thought this was such a good experience to be with the students and to see how receptive they were to us reading to them," said freshman softball player, Lexi Carver. "To be able to put a smile on their faces when we get to read to them, it means a lot to me."
Â
UofL student-athletes are proud to give back to the community by bringing excitement and joy to reading. They answered questions about going to college, being a student-athlete and shared the importance of education.
Â
Keith Oddo, fifth-year men's basketball student-athlete, reflected back on when he was in elementary school, "I remember when I was kid and student-athletes would come speak to us and now I'm in that position to give back in the same way and to positively impact them."
Â
"I am glad I got this experience to read to these kids because we can show them that reading is empowering," said fifth-year football student-athlete Russ Yeast. "We were able to tell them the importance of staying in school and how literacy is important to making it through school."
