UofL wins 6-1
LOUISVILLE, Ky -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team continues its strong start to the 2020 season by picking up a 6-1 win over Bowling Green State on Saturday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
Louisville clinched the doubles point with a win at No.3 by Rhea Verma and Diana Wong, who beat Ayumi Sasaki and Laura Silveira 6-0. UofL clinched the point when the No. 1 pair of Raven Neely and Maia Haumueller downed Marta Bettinelli and Marharita-Sophia Tavpash 6-1.
Â
"We did have a new doubles team today of Rhea and Diana, and they came out and played lights out. The team of Maia and Raven have been playing all season together and they played really really well at No.1. They helped set the tone as far as doubles go," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach.
Â
The Cardinals stayed on top of the Falcons in singles, starting with a win at No.5 when Diana Wong swept Laura Silveira 6-0, 6-0. The next point was won by Rhea Verma at No. 2, who won 6-1, 6-3 over Ionna Tsadari. The match was clinched by Raven Neely at No. 1, who rolled 6-2, 6-3 over Marharita-Sophie Tavpash. The Cards also got a point from Nikolina Jovic, who won 6-1, 6-3 over Ayumi Sasaki. Jelena Vujanic also secured a point at No. 3, who won 6-3, 7-6 over Yulia Kapitanova.
Â
"It's been about two weeks since our last match. We've implemented some stuff during that time. For the most part, I feel like just about every spot implemented what we went over. I'm still not 100 percent comfortable but it did look much better today. So I think we're trending in the right way", said Beckham.
Â
The Cards will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21` at 4 p.m. to take on Austin Peay at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
