UofL Athletics Participates in Cards Giving
November 24, 2020 | Beyond the Buzzer
No matter the sport, the city of Louisville never fails to support the student-athletes at the University of Louisville. To return the favor, student-athletes volunteer in the community throughout the year. This year, they have had to be much more creative in their engagement.
Â
Last week, UofL Athletics finished the annual two-week "Cards Giving" drive in which student-athletes and staff collected funds and non-perishable items for the Louisville Urban League, The West End School, Feed the West and the Cardinal Cupboard. Student-athletes and coaches from 11 teams, along with staff from 12 departments came together to donate a total of 35 meals and collect more than 800 non-perishable food items.
Â
This year has been very challenging for many, and UofL Athletics wanted to be able to do its part to help the community. Senior softball captain and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president Celene Funke played a huge factor in getting involved.
Â
"It was a great opportunity for us as student-athletes to give back to the families of Louisville," said Funke. "There's nothing better than being able to have a Thanksgiving dinner after a hectic 2020 year."
Â
Director of Student-Athlete Leadership and Development, Alyssa Murphy was also a key contributor on the organizing front to get staff involved was also very proud of the opportunity to give back.
Â
"Being part of the Louisville community is an important aspect of the lives of our student-athletes and Athletics staff," said Murphy. "We are often reminded how special this community is, especially when we all support and respect each other. This year in particular, many families are struggling to make ends meet so our student-athletes, staff and coaches stepped up to help provide Thanksgiving meals, including turkeys, for 35 families. This was a collaborative effort and we are thrilled to be able to give back to people that need it most."
Â
"Additionally, we were able to collect a significant amount of food to give to the Cardinal Cupboard so that any UofL student that needs help can find it without fear of being without during the holidays," continued Murphy. "I'm beyond proud of our athletic community and know we will continue to support the city of Louisville as much as we can."
