Cards Play Host to Northwestern Friday

Louisville will take on Northwestern Friday at 12 p.m.
Louisville Ky. – After two matches on the road, the University of Louisville men's tennis team returns home to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Friday at 12 p.m. against Northwestern.

About Louisville Men's Tennis
The Cardinals (5-1, 1-0 ACC) split a pair of matches in the Intercollegiate Kick-Off Weekend. Their 4-1 loss against No. 5 Baylor in the final's snapped Louisville's season-opening five match win streak.
The Cardinals are receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team top 25 poll released on Jan. 22.
Louisville is led in singles by junior Tin Chen, who carries a 19-3 overall record and is 4-0 at No. 1 in dual matches. Sophomore Sergio Hernandez follows with a 13-4 record and is 4-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Hernandez and fellow sophomore Fabien Salle lead the Cardinals in doubles with an overall record of 13-3.
Chen was named ACC Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week on January 21 after leading Louisville to a 4-3 upset of No. 10 Virginia. The junior clinched the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win against No. 68 Gianni Ross at No. 1
Chen stands at No. 42 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. In the fall, he became the first player in program history to capture the ITA/Ohio Valley Regional singles title.
Head coach Rodrigo da Silva is in his first season at the helm at Louisville. He took over the program in September 2019 after spending four seasons as the head men's tennis coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He makes his return to UofL where he spent six years (2009-14) as an assistant coach, helping guide the Cardinals to three BIG EAST Conference tournament titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances.

Scouting the Wildcats: Northwestern (3-1) is currently riding on a two-match win streak after taking down Memphis 4-2 and IUPUI 4-0 at home on Jan. 19.  The Wildcats are led by No. 123 Steven Forman and No. 125 Nick Brookes in singles. Northwestern returns six players from last season including Dominik Stary, who was an All-Big Ten first team selection in 2019. The head coach of the Wildcats is Arvid Swan, who is in his 11th year.
