Louisville improves to 5-0 on the season

WACO, Texas – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated New Mexico 4-1 in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend Saturday at Baylor's Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

The Cardinals (5-0) will advance Sunday's championship match where they will take on the winner of the other first round match between fifth-ranked Baylor and Gonzaga. The winner of Sunday's match will earn a bid to the National Team Indoors.

"Very proud how the guys competed today," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "After we won the doubles point, New Mexico played well and gained momentum. Our guys stayed tough throughout the match and we were able to get the win."

Louisville opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 2. The Lobos gained an early edge at the No. 3 spot when Alex Maggs and Stepan beat Alex Wesbrooks and David Mizrahi 6-4. The Cardinal answered with a win on court two where Tin Chen and Matthew Fung teamed to beat Dominic West and Facundo Bermeijo 6-3. The first point of the match was decided at No. 1 with Fabien Salle and Sergio Hernandez's 6-3 victory over Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai.

In singles, Clement Filho quickly extended the lead to 2-0 when he topped Nicolas Prieto 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. New Mexico answered on court 5 where Bermejo defeated Matthew Fung 6-4, 6-3. Chen picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win against West to make the score 3-1. Hernandez ended the match with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Stepan Holis at No. 2.
