Dieye Scores Twice to Lead Cards Over #17 Hokies
September 20, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Cardinals earn first ACC victory of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A pair of goals by Cherif Dieye late in the second half secured Louisville's 2-1 victory over No. 17 Virginia Tech on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With the come-from-behind win, the Cards improve to 3-1-2 (1-0-1 ACC) on the season while the Hokies fall to 5-2 (0-2 ACC).
Despite a putting two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of action for the Cards, Kristo Strickler ultimately put the Hokies on the board first in the 36th minute.
The Cardinals continued to apply pressure on the Hokies' backline throughout the second half, which paid off in the 82nd minute as Dieye scored the equalizer. After a long pass from Louka Masset, Dieye snuck past a Hokie defender and fired a shot to the upper right corner of the far post.
Less than four minutes later, Dieye found the back of the net again in what proved to be the game-winner. The senior midfielder scored his fourth goal of the season with a shot inside the left post after stealing the ball down the center line in the 85th minute.
The Cardinals out-shot the Hokies 10-3 in the second half with Dieye, who registered his first multi-goal game of his career, leading the team with five shots. Five other Cards each had a shot on goal.
Louisville returns to action at Lynn Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a non-conference matchup against No. 3 Georgetown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
