
Diop Helps Lead Senegal to Silver at FIBA AfroBasket

Yacine Diop averaged 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in five games.
DAKAR, Senegal - University of Louisville redshirt senior forward Yacine Diop helped lead Senegal to a silver medal at the 2019 FIBA Women's AfroBasket. The 12-nation tournament took place in Diop's home city, the Senegalese capital of Dakar.
Senegal advanced to the championship with wins in its first four games by an average margin of 29 points. They rolled through pool play with a 77-36 win over the Ivory Coast and an 85-47 win over Egypt. They then won 88-54 against Angola in the quarterfinals before overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit to down Mozambique, 60-57, to advance to the championship.
In the finals, Senegal trailed 48-37 to start the fourth quarter and again mounted a comeback. They scored the first 12 points in the final stanza to take a 49-48 lead, but eventually fell 60-55.
Diop finished the tournament averaging 7.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.4 assists. She twice finished in double figures with 11 points on 5-9 shooting against Egypt and 14 points on 6-10 shooting against Angola. She also added seven rebounds in the win over Angola.
She is entering her second year with the Cardinals after suffering a season-ending knee injury just four games into last season. She averaged 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the first three games, while recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener at Western Kentucky.
She came to Louisville as a graduate transfer from Pittsburgh, where she started 93 games and ranks 18th all-time in scoring with 1,093 points.
