Violette Legrand repeats as All-ACC performer
CLEMSON, S.C. – With 41 points in the overall standings, the University of Louisville rowing team placed sixth at the 2019 ACC Rowing Championship Saturday morning at Lake Hartwell.
Virginia earned its 10th-consecutive and 19th overall ACC championship with 95 points, narrowly edging out Duke for the automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils took second with 90 points, followed by Syracuse in third with 75 and Notre Dame and Clemson tied for fourth with 58.
For the second straight season, sophomore Violette Legrand was named to the Second Team All-ACC by a vote of the league's coaches. Virginia's varsity eight boat was named the league's crew of the year while Duke's Megan Cooke Carcagno and Amelia Shunk took Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors.
In the closing varsity eight grand final, the Cardinals finished fifth with a time of 6:44.204 as Virginia held off runner-up Duke to clinch the conference title. In other grand finals, the 3V8+ placed fifth, turning in a time of 7:04.014, while the 2V8+ finished sixth with a mark of 6:57.262.
The Cards' strongest performance of the day came from the 2V4+, who battled with Notre Dame and North Carolina in a highly-competitive petite final with multiple lead changes. After a slow start, coxswain Audrey Sholiton's crew gradually caught up with the Tar Heels and Fighting Irish, grabbing a one-second lead at 1,500m mark of the race. However, Notre Dame used a burst of its own to pull out the victory, with Louisville posting a time of 7:52.754. Later in the morning, the V4+ took third in their petite final, finishing behind UNC and Boston College with a time of 7:52.554.
