2019 signee Matthew Fung won the USTA National Level 3 Academia Sanchez-Casal tournament
University of Louisville men's tennis signee Matthew Fung recently captured the singles title at the USTA National Level 3 Academia Sanchez-Casal tournament.
Fung, the tournament's top-seeded player, went 5-0 in the tournament, winning all five matches in straight sets.
"I am proud of Matthew," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Sometimes tennis players sign and go in hibernation from their sport until the summer before their Freshman year on campus. National Level players compete in tournaments 12 months of the year from 11 years old to 18 so the temptation to take their first break from the sport after signing is high. Matthew and his dad/coach Chris are different. Since signing with us, he is playing even more tournaments than usual. At this pace, he will be college-ready."
Fung will join the Cardinals from Miami, Florida where he played an instrumental role in Miami Palmetto Senior High School's state championship run last year. He holds a 5-star rating according to tennisrecruiting.net and is ranked No. 39 nationally in the class of 2019.
