
Diop, Senegal Open FIBA World Cup Play on Saturday

Diop and Senegal will compete in Group D, along with the United States, Latvia and China.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's basketball redshirt senior forward Yacine Diop and the Senegal National Team open FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup play on Saturday.Â
Senegal is making its first appearance in the World Cup since 2010 and will compete in Group D along with reigning champion USA, China and Latvia.
They open the group phase against the United States on Saturday, square off against Latvia on Sunday and then close the opening week against China on Tuesday.
The top team from each group will directly advance to the quarterfinals. The teams that place fourth in the group stage will be eliminated. The teams placed second and third from each group will advance to the quarterfinal qualifications on Wednesday, where the winners of the qualification round will then progress to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals begin on Friday, Sept. 28 with the championship on Sunday, Sept. 30.
Diop is entering her first year with the Cardinals as a graduate transfer after starting all 93 games in her three years at Pittsburgh. She ranks 18th all-time in scoring at Pitt with 1,093 points.
As a senior, she led the Panthers in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 rpg) and four of her team-high seven double-doubles were against ACC opponents. She put up 24 double-figure scoring outings, including a seven-game streak to start the year and eight times scored 20 points or more. She was the only Panther to start and score in all 30 games.
