Cards will continue fall action with an intra-squad 'Red & Black' scrimmage Saturday at 10 a.m.
The University of Louisville softball team will continue the 2018-19 fall season with the 'Red & Black' intra-squad scrimmage Saturday at 10 a.m. at Ulmer Stadium. Admission is free.
Â
The Cardinals are coming off of its first competition of the fall season. After a doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, head coach Holly Aprile was pleased with what she saw on the field.
Â
"I thought we played really well," said Aprile. "We got a lot of things worked out. We're working on our communication. I thought we hit the ball well. We have some defensive things to clean up, but that's what the fall is all about, working on things, getting to know each other and our staff is getting to know the team. I was really pleased with how we played."
Â
In the doubleheader against EKU last weekend, the Cardinals exhibited power with a pair of home runs from junior Caitlin Ferguson along with speed as junior Celene Funke belted out a triple and a pair of stolen bases
Â
"There will definitely be some 'small ball,' that's some of the personnel that we have. But we also have a few more people hitting away and we're working to mix it up a little bit," said Aprile when describing the Louisville offense. "I think we'll see a little bit more diversity there and we're going to look to drive the ball a little bit more while still generating offense similarly with our personnel."
Â
"We have a lot of strengths," said Aprile. "I think our pitching staff is definitely a strength. In addition to our returners: Megan Hensley, Danielle Watson, Kyra Snyder, Paige Schindler and Darrianne Hale, Taylor Roby, who redshirted last season is also pitching this year. Our pitching staff is strong and deep. Overall, we have really nice leadership. We're working on a lot of things, but I'm very proud of where we are and the progress that we are making. There have been a lot of changes and a lot of things for the team to adapt to, but they're doing a great job with that."
Â
Following this weekend's practice game, the Cards will return to action on Sept. 30 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a doubleheader against Indiana University.
