Hall of Famer Wilkins Maloy Passes Away

A former player and assistant coach, Wilkins Maloy was inducted into the UofL Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former University of Louisville women's basketball player, assistant coach and Hall of Famer Maureen "Reene" Wilkins Maloy passed away on Wednesday at 69 years old.
Wilkins Maloy starred at Louisville in basketball and field hockey from 1967-71. She was a basketball captain her junior and senior seasons and led the Cardinals in scoring each of her last three years. As a senior in 1970-71, she averaged 21.2 points per game, which would place her in the top five all-time in single season scoring average; however, the NCAA does not recognize women's statistics prior to 1976.
Following college, she was successful in many roles. She was the first woman sports writer for the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times, the head basketball coach at Assumption High School from 1977-1980, where she accumulated a 77-22 record and was named 1979 7th Region Coach of the Year, and then an assistant basketball coach for the UofL women's basketball team from 1980-1987, a stretch that saw the Cardinals win three Metro Championships.
She was a commissioned Louisville Cardinal and Kentucky Colonel. Outside of athletics and coaching, she primarily worked as a trust officer for PNC Bank where she ascended to Vice President of the IRA and Trust Department.Â
She was inducted into the UofL Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Assumption High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
