Cards face No. 1 UNC on Sunday
The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 7-0 to No. 42-ranked NC State Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
The Cardinals move to 13-7 overall and 3-6 in the ACC. The Wolfpack moves to 12-11 and 6-5 in the league.
Â
"I am disappointed in the loss but NC State played really well. There were some things we could have done better but they gave us very few opportunities," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "Our offense is not really where it needs to be. We were not playing offensive tennis which is odd for us. I give NC State a lot of credit."
Â
The Cardinals dropped the doubles point. The No. 19-ranked pair from NC State, Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin defeated No. 62-ranked Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg 6-2 at No. 1. The Wolfpack clinched the point when the No. 3 pair of Bianca Moldovan and Tayla Stenta downed a tenacious pair in Raven Neely and Maya Smith 6-4.
Â
In singles, despite going three sets in three different positions the Cardinals were unable to close out the matches. Most notably, Aleksandra Mally dropped her first set 6-3, then fought to a 7-5 win the second match before falling 6-4 to No. 80-ranked Anna Rogers at No. 1. At No. 2, Mariana Humberg dropped her first set 6-3 before winning the second set 6-2 and then dropped the third set 6-2. At No. 5, Raven Neely won the first set 7-5, fell 6-3 in the second and then 6-2 in the third.
Â
The Cardinals face No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Bass Rudd.
