Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff upset No. 18 Guy Iradukunda 6-1, 6-3.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 38 University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to the No. 9 Florida State Seminoles on Friday evening at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Cardinals drop to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in ACC play.
The Seminoles put the early pressure on the Cardinals as the doubles team of Jose Gracia and Alex Knaff defeated Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster 6-1 on court two. The 14th-ranked duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn responded with a 6-4 win over No. 60 Aziz Dougaz and Guy Iradukunda at No. 1, but Florida State ultimately captured the doubles point as George Hedley and Fredrik Moe fell 7-5 to Lucas Poullain and Terrell Whitehurst at the three-spot.
In singles, Morin-Kougoucheff downed his third ranked opponent in four matches, upsetting No. 18 Iradukunda by a mark of 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 to even the score at 1-1. However, Florida State quickly countered with Chase Wood's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hedley at No. 5.
The Seminoles extended their lead to 3-1 as No. 76 Dougaz topped No. 98 Wynn in a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 decision on court two. Only a few minutes later, Rana Roop Bhullar clinched the match for Florida State with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Clement Filho at No. 6.
After falling 6-4 in his first set to No. 61 Poullain, Nicolas Rouanet earned a 6-4 win in the second set, but eventually dropped the tiebreaker 10-6 on court three. In the final match of the evening, Knaff triumphed 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) over Gomez at No. 4 to cap off the 6-1 victory for the Seminoles.
"There were five very close matches today and we lost all of them," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We played well enough to make it closer, but FSU was more clutch than we were. We will regroup for Miami on Sunday."
Up next, the Cardinals continue their Florida road trip with a matchup against the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
