Men's Tennis Tops Georgia Tech 4-3
March 25, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The No. 14 doubles pair of Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn upset Georgia Tech's No. 11 Divar and Kay.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team earned their fourth consecutive victory in the first match of Sunday's doubleheader, beating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-3 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the ACC.
"That was an important match for us," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Georgia Tech has beaten us the last three times we've played, so we were really wanting to reverse the tide and make it a rivalry again, and that's what we did today."
The No. 14 pair of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn upset No. 11 Carlos Divar and Michael Kay on court one by a mark of 6-3 to give the Cardinals the early lead in doubles. Courts two and three came down to the wire, but George Hedley and Nicolas Rouanet came away with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for Louisville. On court two, Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster were down 5-4 in a tight battle with Elijah Melendez and Chris Yun.
Morin-Kougoucheff earned the first singles win for the Cards, defeating No. 54 Divar 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, extending Louisville's lead to 2-0. On court two, Wynn topped Phillip Gresk 6-2, 6-3 to increase the lead to 3-0. Just seconds later, Gomez clinched the match for the Cardinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Melendez at the three-spot.
In other singles action, Georgia Tech's Andrew Li defeated Hedley 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5 to get the Yellow Jackets on the board. On court four, Rouanet won his first set 6-4 over Kay, but then fell 6-3 in the second. In the tiebreaker, Kay pulled out the 10-5 victory for Georgia Tech to move the score to 4-2.
With just one court remaining, Georgia Tech's Yun registered a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Lancaster on court six.
The Cardinals will be back in action today at 5 p.m. for a matchup against the Samford Bulldogs at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
