Men's Tennis Upsets Clemson 4-0
March 23, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff clinched the match for the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first of three weekend matches, the No. 49 University of Louisville men's tennis team upset No. 39 Clemson on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, topping the Tigers by a mark of 4-0. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in ACC play.
"That's a really good win for us," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "The 4-0 is not really indicative of the match. It was three sets for the final three matches, and the one that clinched it was 7-5 in the third. That thing could have swung to Clemson very easily, they're just great fighters."
The Cards gained the early advantage in doubles when the junior duo of Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster topped Sam Edwards and Yizhou Liu by a mark of 6-3 on court two. At the three-spot, George Hedley and Nicolas Rouanet secured the doubles point for Louisville with a 6-4 victory over Carlos Keladis and Marshall Dagostine. On court one, the 14th-ranked pair of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn were in a tight 6-6 (3-5) battle with No. 22 Alex Favrot and Simon Baudry before play was halted.
In singles, Clement Filho defeated Reed Rabideau 6-3, 6-2 on court six to increase Louisville's lead to 2-0. Soon after, No. 98 Wynn stretched the score to 3-0 in favor of the Cards with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Baudry at No. 2. However, it was Morin-Kougoucheff who clinched the match for Louisville, downing No. 47 Alex Favrot 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.
On court five, Lancaster won his first set 6-2 over Yizou, but fell in the second set 6-4. He was down 3-2 in the third before the match was stopped. Gomez took the first set 7-5 over Kelaidis at No. 4, but lost the second 7-6 (7-5) and was down 2-1 in the third. Rouanet also won his first set by a mark of 6-3 on court three. He fell 6-3 in the second and was behind 2-1 in the third.
Up next, the Cards return to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Samford Bulldogs. Louisville will take on the Yellow Jackets at 12 p.m., followed by the Bulldogs at 5 p.m.
