Cards close event with varsity four boat win
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville women's rowing team concluded the 2018 Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational with a solid showing Sunday morning at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue. In the opening set, the Cardinals grabbed one win and posted three second-place finishes.
"Overall, I think we had a productive week of training and racing in Oak Ridge," said associate head coach Sheila Rinozzi. "We really love hosting the Invite and are so thankful for all the hard work from Oak Ridge Rowing that made the regatta run so smoothly. The Cardinal Invitational gets bigger and more competitive every year, so it's extremely beneficial for our team to race against some of the country's fastest crews, including many teams we will see again over the next eight weeks."
In the varsity eight race, Louisville was outpaced by leading Minnesota, but was able to pass Notre Dame for a second-place time of 6:12.933. The following race also featured a dramatic sprint as the V4 crew made a late dash to pull ahead of the Golden Gophers for a winning time of 6:56.368. The Cards were the runners-up in their remaining races, with the 2V8 boat clocking in at 6:19.613 and the 2V4 closing the regatta with a mark of 7:06.676.
"This weekend was a great opportunity for us to kick off the 2K season and see exactly where we stand against some very quick crews," said Rinozzi. "It's a great learning experience and we are all leaving this week feeling hungry for more. I am confident the team is eager to get back to work on the Ohio."
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the Pac-12 Challenge, which will take place on March 31-April 1 in Redwood Shores, Calif. Check GoCards.com for all news and information about the Louisville women's rowing team.
