Swimming Set to Host Louisville Invitational

Cards have two days of championship format style racing.
The No.14/14 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams enter postseason action this weekend as they prepare to host the 2018 UofL Invitational February 10-11 at Ralph Wright Natatorium. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. each morning, followed by finals at 5 p.m.

Last time out, the Cardinals fell to national powerhouse Indiana in their final dual meet of the season. The Louisville women dropped a tightly contested battle to the Hoosiers by a score of 160.5-139.5. Mallory Comerford led the Cardinals with victories in the 100 (49.49) and 200 (1:46.81) free, while also finishing second in the 100 fly (54.07). Grace Oglesby and Arina Openysheva also picked up wins for Louisville, touching first in the 200 fly (1:59.09) and 50 free (23.07) respectively.

On the men's side, the Hoosiers defeated Louisville by a mark of 184.5-115.5. Marcelo Acosta paced the Cardinals with wins in both the 500 (4:25.61) and 1000 (9:05.90) free. Freshman Nick Albiero continued his strong debut season with a win in the 200 back (1:45.23) and a second place in the 200 fly (1:46.68). Newcomer Daniel Sos also earned a first place finish for the Cards in the 400 IM with a time of 3:48.31.

In the diving events, Daniel Pinto captured the 1-meter title with a score of 324.68. Molly Fears also had a solid day, recording second place finishes in both the 1-meter (278.33) and the 3-meter (304.73).

Heading into the championship portion of the season, multiple Cardinals have claimed a spot in the Division I top-10 rankings. Comerford sits atop the standings in the 100 free (46.70) and 200 free (1:41.17), while also ranking fourth in the 100 fly (50.92), fifth in the 500 free (4:35.78), and sixth in the 50 free (21.87). Oglesby owns two times in the top-10 with the seventh spot in both the 100 (51.69) and 200 (1:54.28) fly. Also in the top-10 for the Cards are Sophie Cattermole at No. 8 in the 1650 free (16:02.36), Mariia Astashkina at No. 10 in the 100 breast (59.71), and Casey Fanz No. 10 in the 50 free (22.04).

For the men, Carlos Claverie adds two top-10 performances with the second spot in the 200 breast (1:53.10) and the 10th position in the 100 distance (52.83). Acosta also owns two top-10 rankings with the No. 5 time in the 1650 free (14:45.52) and the No. 7 time in the 1000 free (8:57.04).

All five of the Louisville women's relays are ranked within the top-10, highlighted by the second place 800 free relay with a time of 6:58.41. The men's 800 free relay team sits just outside the top-10, ranking 11th with a 6:22.02, less than a half second back of the 10th-ranked squad.

Following the Louisville Invitational, select members of the team will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina for the ACC Championships. The women are slated to compete from February 14-17, while the men's competition will run from February 21-24.
